L.S. Lowry prints gain strong traction at auction

The market for prints by British artist Laurence Stephen Lowry has shown notable strength recently, with collectors and investors increasingly drawn to his distinctive portrayals of industrial life and “matchstick” figures. Once considered mainly regional favourites, Lowry’s prints are now establishing themselves as solid performers at auction, attracting strong bids and competitive interest.

In 2026 and late 2025 sales across UK auction houses, signed and limited-edition Lowry prints have regularly fetched prices well above typical estimates. For example, a trio of signed prints including Ferry Boats and On the Sands achieved a combined total of £6,200 in a Midlands auction, with individual lots making between £1,700 and £2,300.

Market data from recent auctions shows broader demand as well, works in town and street scene categories have brought in notable sums, with pieces such as Berwick Upon Tweed selling for over £8,000.

Although Lowry prints typically sell for less than original paintings, their accessibility and historic appeal help sustain strong interest. As one expert guide notes, prints such as Group of People and Going to the Match have surpassed £20,000 at recent auctions, reflecting a rising collector appetite beyond the rarest masterpieces.

This renewed vitality in the auction market underscores how Lowry’s work, whether in original oil or printed form, continues to resonate with art lovers and investors, blending everyday British scenes with enduring cultural value.
